WHEELING, W.Va. (Nov. 17) – The Wheeling Jesuit University men's basketball team was outdone by West Virginia Wesleyan, 78-60, in its conference-opener at the McDonough Center on Saturday afternoon.
The Cardinals fell to 0-3 on the season and picked up their first loss in the Mountain East Conference (MEC) standings. Meanwhile, the Bobcats improved to 3-1 overall and earned their first MEC victory.
Freshman Franck Kamgain (Kansas City, Mo./DME Sports Academy) led the Cardinals in scoring with 15 points, extending his double-digit scoring streak to three games. Freshman Jay Gentry (Milwaukee, Wisc./Brown Deer) led all players with nine rebounds and dished out a team-high five assists.
Wheeling Jesuit played West Virginia Wesleyan close for the opening 10 minutes of the game, never trailing by more than five points. The Bobcats then jumped out in front, going up 30-16 with 6:49 left in the first period. The Cardinals only allowed six more points and scored 10 in the remainder of the first half to go into halftime down 36-26.
The second half of the game was controlled by the Bobcats with their lead never dropping below 11 points. They grabbed their largest lead of the game, 24 points, with 5:16 left in the second period.
WVWC shot 30 of 54 (56 percent) from the field, including 11 of 24 (46 percent) from beyond the arc. Meanwhile, WJU shot just 35 percent from the field and 32 percent from downtown.
Wheeling Jesuit will head to Glenville State for its next game on Monday, November 19. The MEC clash is set to tip-off at 7:30 p.m.
