GLENVILLE, W.Va. (Oct. 4) - The Wheeling Jesuit University women's soccer team picked up a 2-0 win at Glenville State in a weather delayed match late Thursday night.
The win improves the Cardinals to 2-8 overall, 1-5 in the Mountain East Conference (MEC). Meanwhile, the Pioneers drop to 0-7 in league play, 0-11 this season.
The contest hit a snag less than 10 minutes into the match when the weather did not cooperate and forced both teams indoors for nearly two hours.
The Cardinals kept the ball in the Glenville State zone when play resumed and finally broke through when sophomore
Allyson Evans (Bernville, Pa./Tulpehocken) found the back of the net in the 20th-minute to make the score 1-0.
Wheeling Jesuit tacked on an insurance marker in the second half in the 68th-minute on a goal by sophomore
Kendra Benzel (Bernville, Pa./Tulpehocken) to put the match out of reach and claim the team's first MEC win this season.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Asya Carney (Moundsville, W.Va./John Marshall) secured the clean sheet after making two saves in the match.
The Cardinals controlled the pace of the match against the Pioneers. Wheeling Jesuit out-shot Glenville State 39-to-5, including a 17-to-2 advantage in the shots-on-goal category.
WJU returns home this Sunday, October 7 when it hosts Concord for a MEC contest at 1 p.m.
