Women's soccer edged at Fairmont State, 2-1

FAIRMONT, W.Va. (Oct. 21) - The Wheeling Jesuit women's soccer team was defeated by Fairmont State 2-1 Sunday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference (MEC) match.

The loss drops the Cardinals to 3-11-1 overall, 2-8-1 in league play. Meanwhile, the Falcons improve to 7-5-3 overall, 5-4-2 in the MEC this season.

Fairmont State got on the board twice in the first half with goals in the 17th- and 34th-minutes to take a 2-0 lead into halftime.

Wheeling Jesuit applied pressure on the Falcons with a trio of shot attempts during an eight-minute stretch in the final 20 of the contest, before senior Emily Hartley (Coshocton, Ohio/Coshocton) finally broke through with her team-leading eighth goal of the season in the 84th-minute to slice the deficit in half at 2-1.

Hartley attempted the Cardinals lone shot in the final six minutes, but it was blocked by a Falcon defender and Wheeling Jesuit was unable to secure a game-tying goal.

After being out-shot 9-to-2 in the first half, the Cardinals held a 7-to-5 edge in the shots department in the second half. They also were granted three corner kicks after being held without one in the opening 45 minutes.

Junior goalkeeper Megan Herter (Springfield, Ill./Sacred Heart-Griffin) made eight saves in the loss.

The Cardinals enter the final week of the regular-season with a road match at Notre Dame (Ohio) on Wednesday, October 24 at 3 p.m.
