Men's soccer finds late winner to overtake Concord, 1-0

ATHENS, W.Va. (Oct. 21) – The Wheeling Jesuit men's soccer team scored a goal late in the second half to overtake Concord 1-0 Sunday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference (MEC) match.

The Cardinals improve to 8-4 in league play, 9-4-2 overall, and stand firmly in third place in the MEC with 24 points. Entering the final week of the regular-season, Wheeling Jesuit is three points ahead of Urbana for the No. 3 seed after the Blue Knights posted a 4-1 loss at West Virginia Wesleyan earlier today. Meanwhile, Concord falls to 4-9-1 overall, 4-7-1 in the conference standings.

The Cardinals took 17 shots, managed seven shots on goal, and forced six corners throughout the match with the Mountain Lions. Senior Martin Minuzzi (Cordoba, Argentina/Nazareth) scored his 10th goal of the season with sophomore Gaizka Redondo (Vizcaya, Spain/Salesianos Duesto) providing the assist.

The Mountain Lions managed just one shot on goal in each half. Goalkeeper Kyle Brown made six saves to keep Concord in the game until the end.

The first half was uneventful outside of a shot by Minuzzi striking the crossbar in the third-minute. The second half appeared to be more of the same until Minuzzi scored his fourth game-winning goal of the year in the 73rd-minute. Redondo delivered the through ball for Minuzzi to beat the opposing keeper in a one-on-one matchup.

Freshman goalkeeper Jonathan Bosmyr (Joenkoeping, Sweden/Erik Dahlbergs) made two saves to keep a clean sheet.

The Cardinals travel to second-place Notre Dame (Ohio) on Wednesday, October 24 for their next match. Kick-off is set for 12 p.m.
