Cardinals tripped up at No. 21 Notre Dame, 1-0

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio (Oct. 24) – The Wheeling Jesuit University men's soccer team was handed a 1-0 defeat by No. 21 Notre Dame (Ohio) in a Mountain East Conference (MEC) bout on Wednesday afternoon.

The Cardinals dropped to 9-5-2 overall and 8-5 (24 points) in the MEC with the loss. The Flacons cemented their second place standing in the MEC by improving to 10-3 (30 points) in the conference and 13-3 overall. Urbana (21 points) now has a chance to go level with Wheeling Jesuit in the MEC standings if they can get a win against Concord before the final weekend of the regular season.

The first half was played even, with neither side being able to find the back of the net. The Cardinals shot four times and forced two saves. The Falcons hit the crossbar once in the first half and did not threaten to score otherwise.

The second half was also played evenly, with Wheeling Jesuit outshooting Notre Dame (Ohio) 7-6. However, a defensive error by the Cardinals would make the difference in the game. After a cross was mishandled by the WJU defense, Notre Dame striker Guilherme Gloria was able to tap in an easy shot from in front of goal in the 67th-minute.

Senior Martin Minuzzi (Cordoba, Argentina/Nazareth) led all players in shots taken with three, but couldn't find his 11th goal of the season.

Wheeling Jesuit's next game is a conference matchup versus West Liberty on Saturday, October 27th at Bishop Schmitt Field. The final game of the regular season will commence at 7 p.m.
