WHEELING, W.Va. (Oct. 18) – The Wheeling Jesuit women's soccer team came away with a 4-1 victory after outplaying Urbana during its Thursday evening Mountain East Conference (MEC) match at Bishop Schmitt Field.
The win improves the Cardinals to 3-10-1 overall and 2-7-1 in the MEC, while Urbana falls to 3-10 overall and 2-9 in league play.
Senior
Kayla Klock (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) gave the Cardinals the lead in the 19th-minute of play, scoring her first goal of the season from a goalline cross by senior
Emily Hartley (Coshocton, Ohio/Coshocton) to make the score 1-0.
The first half was evenly shot with the Blue Knights taking nine while the Cardinals took 11, but the attempts were unsuccessful, sending the match into halftime at 1-0.
Sophomore
Marley Magruder (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) added a goal for the Cardinals with a shot drilled into the upper right corner of the net. Freshman
Braedynn Porter (Mineral Ridge, Ohio/Mineral Ridge) sent her the ball at the top of the penalty box to earn the primary assist.
The Blue Knights answered the goal with one of their own just five minutes later, but the Cardinals were not fazed. Hartley came back to score two goals for the Cardinals to push the lead to 4-1 and help the Cards secure the victory. Magruder sent the ball over the opposing team's defensive line to give Hartley a breakaway score in the 68th-minute and with 10 minutes left to go in the match, Hartley struck again with a shot from 30 yards out.
The Cardinals recorded 20 shots against the Blue Knights which is the team's second-highest for this season. The game is also the highest-scoring game the Cardinals have had since 2016.
Junior goalkeeper
Megan Herter (Springfield, Ill./Sacred Heart-Griffin) tallied eight saves for the Cardinals after facing 20 shots by the Blue Knights.
The women's soccer team plays their next MEC match on the road against Fairmont State on Sunday October 21st at 2 p.m.
