CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Oct. 14) – The Wheeling Jesuit women's soccer team suffered a 4-0 loss on the road to Charleston on Sunday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference (MEC) matchup.
The loss drops the Cardinals to 2-10-1 and 1-7-1 in the MEC, while Charleston runs its record to 7-6-1 overall and 6-2-1 in league play.
The Golden Eagles took the lead in the first half with a goal in the 11th-minute of the game. Sophomore
Marley Magruder (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) and senior
Emily Hartley (Coshocton, Ohio/Coshocton) took several shots to try and answer, but the ball did not find its target. The Golden Eagles added to their lead with two more goals in the first half, sending the match into halftime 3-0.
The second half began with junior
Brianna Murgi (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) taking a shot on goal for the Cardinals, but it was saved by Charleston's goalkeeper. Freshman
Kenadee Burgoyne (South Jordan, Utah/Herriman) added shots for the Cardinals, but was unsuccessful in her attempts for a goal. Charleston scored one more goal in the 62nd-minute to end the game at 4-0.
Junior goalkeeper
Megan Herter (Springfield, Ill./Sacred-Heart Griffin) tallied six saves for the Cardinals in the loss.
The women's soccer team will be back at home for another MEC matchup against Urbana on Thursday, October 18th at 5:30 p.m.
