WHEELING, W.Va. (Oct. 10) – The Wheeling Jesuit women's soccer team tied Shepherd 2-2 after going into double overtime on Wednesday night's Mountain East Conference (MEC) game at Bishop Schmitt Field.
The Cardinals now hold a record of 2-9-1 and 1-6-1 in the MEC. The Rams move to 4-6-2 overall and 3-3-2 in the conference standings.
Sophomore
Marley Magruder (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) scored her third goal of the season after she found the back of the net in the 18
th minute of play. The ball had been sent in from a corner-kick by senior
Emily Hartley (Coshocton, Ohio/Coshocton) and ricocheted off several defenders, before Magruder tapped it past the Shepherd goalkeeper to make the score 1-0.
Shepherd got its own goal in the first half with just three minutes left until halftime, evening the score at 1-1 entering the break.
Hartley put the Cardinals ahead in the second half with a low strike into the bottom corner of the goal off of a through ball by sophomore
Kendra Benzel (Bernville, Pa./Tulpehocken). The Rams quickly answered with a goal of their own from a free-kick which tied the match at 2-2.
The Cardinals took 26 shots throughout the game, but were unsuccessful in their attempts. After battling through double overtime, the match ended in a draw.
Junior goalkeeper
Megan Herter (Springfield, Ill./Sacred Heart-Griffin) made five saves in the match for the Cardinals.
Wheeling Jesuit plays its next match on the road against MEC opponent Charleston on Sunday, October 14th at 1 p.m.
