Cardinals Ride Early Advantage in Going Away Win Over Yellow Jackets

WHEELING, W.Va. – In a Sunday matinee, the Cardinals came to play. Wheeling Jesuit doubled up West Virginia State in the first quarter and never led by less than double figures in its 86-54 going away Mountain East Conference women's basketball game.

An inside Chenelle Moore layup from Khira Burton gave WJU (6-8/4-4 MEC) its first double figure lead, before Burton hit running jumper as time expired for a 20-10 first quarter advantage. The Cardinals took an 11-point intermission lead, pushed it to 25 points by the end of the third and coasted home over the Yellow Jackets (4-10/4-4 MEC).

"It was a great team effort as we followed the scout and executed the game plan," noted Cardinals head coach Debbie Buff. "Our defense for 40 minutes was stellar. We shared the basketball and outrebounded State. Our depth is improving on a daily basis. Lauren Lipscomb played a great all-around game and stepped up when we needed her to do so."

It was Monica Burns hot shooting, which helped establish the WJU lead with 12 first-quarter points. The junior finished with a season-high 28 points on 10 of 14 from the floor with 6 treys in 9 tries.

Her backcourt mate, Mariah Callen added 14 points of her own to go with seven assists.

Lipscomb dropped a career-high 13 tallies to go with nine rebounds. Moore added her second double-double of the week with 11 points and 17 boards to go with three assists, two steals and a blocked shot.

Burton also had a solid outing with five points, six assist, two rebounds and two steals.

West Virginia State was led by Jasmine Davis' 13 points.
