Cardinals Miss Final Four Shots, Fall in Final Seconds to Mt. Lions

ATHENS, W.Va. – In a game of point swings, the final one did not swing for the Cardinals Thursday night. After leading by a game-high nine points early in the fourth quarter, Wheeling Jesuit saw its final four shots fall off the mark and Concord completed the last point swing to edge a 71-70 women's basketball victory.

The Cardinals (6-9/4-5 Mountain East Conference) put together three runs of eight or more points and netted the final periods opening two buckets by Monica Burns and Mariah Callan to make it 63-54. The Mountain Lions (5-7/3-6 MEC) answered with a 9-0 spurt for the lead, 68-67, with 1:53 left. Burns fourth trey with 1:29 turned out to be the final WJU points as a Concord layup 25 seconds later and one foul shot with under five seconds proved to be the difference.

Burns bested her 28-point day from Sunday with 29 points on 9 of 18 shooting and made all seven free throws to go with three steals.

Chenelle Moore was the lone other Cardinal double-digit scorer with 11 points on 5 of 11 shots. Moore added five rebounds and four assists. Cassi Stein and Callen chipped in nine and eight points with each having five rebounds. Khira Burton had seven points off the bench, while Kiarra Wade contributed eight boards and five blocks.

Concord cleaned the glass to a tune of a 51-40 advantage mainly from the huge performance by Riley Fitzwater's 26 caroms, 20 defensive. Fitzwater pumped in 8 of 11 attempts for 22 points and swatted an impressive nine shots.

WJU made only 4 of 17 shots in the game-deciding 10 minutes with two of those coming in the opening two possessions.

Trailing 11-5 early, Burns downed a tripled to cap an 8-0 run for a 13-11 lead midway through the first. After a second WJU run of 10-1, the visitors held a 25-19 lead.

Concord battled back and led by seven points in the second stanza, but a Burns jumper and two Stein free throws cut the margin to 42-39 for WJU at half.

The Mountain Lions pushed their lead to seven points, 47-40, early in the third. A 13-3 Cardinals run, which Burton started and Burns ended with 3-pointers, reversed the advantage to 53-49 at 3:25 in the frame.

After a 59-54 lead heading to the fourth, WJU increased it to nine points, 63-54, with 8:58 on the clock. Concord netted the next nine points for the 68-67 lead.

WJU moves on to southwest Virginia for a 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, contest at UVa-Wise.
