Cardinals Force OT, but Fall to Cavaliers

WISE, Va. – In flurry of the final half minute of regulation, the Cardinals Monica Burns hit two free throws to force overtime. UVa-Wise, though, never trailed in the extra period and won the extra period for the 92-81 win over Wheeling Jesuit in Mountain East Conference women's basketball.

The Cardinals (6-10/4-6 MEC) forced three turnovers in the final 35 seconds and had Chenelle Moore make a sweeping layup and Burns free throw pair for the 72-72 tie. After two ties in the first 1:48 of overtime, the Cavaliers (3-12/2-8 MEC) netted the next six points and took the contest from there.

Burns produced her third 20-plus game in a row with a team-high 22 to go with five rebounds and three assists. Mariah Callen joined her with 20 points along with five assists, four steals and three rebounds.

Moore was solid inside with 19 points on 9 of 13 shooting. She made it another double-double with 12 rebounds, while the junior had four assists, a block and a steal.

Lauren Lipscomb chipped in nine points and four rebounds. Cassi Stein had eight points and three rebounds.

The Cardinals hit only 4 of 17 from 3-point land in the game. UVa-Wise dominated in bench production, 35-3, and outrebounded the visitors 39-34.

Cynita Webb had a career-high for the Cavaliers with 24 points on 9 of 11 attempts and 11 caroms.

Following a Moore 3-point play to begin the game, UVa-Wise scored the next eight points and led the rest of the opening quarter to a tune of 24-13.

Down 32-23, Lipscomb, Callen and Burns made three-straight layups to cut the deficit to 32-29 midway through the second. The Cavaliers took a 41-35 intermission advantage.

Callen and Moore help cut the margin to two, 41-39, at 8:53 in the third. Burns completed a 9-0 Cards run to edge ahead 46-45. UVa-Wise answered with the next seven points to make it 52-46 and led 54-48 at the end of the stanza.
