Cardinals Hold Home Court over Falcons

WHEELING, W.Va. – In a step forward, the Cardinals held home court on Wednesday night. Wheeling Jesuit doubled up Notre Dame College by scoring the final 12 points of the first half and never gave up the advantage the rest of the way for a 70-58 women's basketball win.

Trailing 16-15 with 8:12 left in the second frame, a Mariah Callen trey pushed the Cardinals (7-10/4-6 Mountain East Conference) back in front and started the game-deciding run, which was capped by a Monica Burns driving layup to make it 27-18. The Falcons (12-6/8-3 MEC) pulled back to within two points, 32-30, halfway through the third, but the home team regained its footing with a 10-2 spurt to close the door.

"It was an outstanding team defensive effort. We played very hard against a very good Notre Dame team with the exception of the first few minutes as we followed the scout to perfection," noted WJU head coach Debbie Buff. "Chenelle (Moore) and Mariah played complete games. Cassi Stein played a great floor game with steals and defense Mo Burns had five assists in the second half, which enabled us to go inside."

Callen led four double figure WJU scorers with 19 points, including three 3-pointers and five rebounds. Burns joined her in the backcourt scoring with 14 tallies and her five assists.

Moore dominated the glass with 19 rebounds, 12 on the defensive end, and 13 points. Stein added seven points, five rebounds and a pair of assists.

Off the WJU bench, Khira Burton hit double digits for the first time this season with 11 points as she went 6 of 6 from the foul line and dished out two helpers.

"Kiki (Burton) and Tori Harrison were big off the bench for us," stressed Buff.

The Cardinals outrebounded the taller Falcons team, 39-28.

Kim Cook pace NDC with 22 points on 10 of 19 from the floor.

WJU now prepares for its first meeting with rival West Liberty on Saturday, Jan. 20. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
