Cardinals Start Fast in OT, Defeat Hilltoppers to Give Buff Win No. 200

WHEELING, W.Va. – After a five-point late lead slipped away in regulation, the Cardinals started the extra period with the first seven points. Wheeling Jesuit never trailed in overtime and defeated West Liberty, 79-72, in women's basketball to give Cardinals head coach Debbie Buff her 200th collegiate coaching win.

The Hilltoppers (7-11/6-6 Mountain East Conference) scored the final five points of regulation to force overtime, 67-67. Chenelle Moore hit a jumper, Monica Burns a top-of-the-key 3-pointer and an inside Cassi Stein layup for a fast WJU (8-10/6-6 MEC) overtime start and propelled the home team to victory.

"I am so very proud of our entire team from top to bottom. We followed the game plan and played outstanding scout defense," said Buff. "It is great to play at home with such an electrifying atmosphere. Mariah Callen was a veteran leader and Cassi Stein was stellar on defense. Lauren Lipscomb and Chenelle Moore were also great on both sides of the ball, while Mo Burns lead the charge of a very balanced scoring attack."

Burns downed four 3-pointers and paced the home team with 22 points to go with five rebounds and a pair of assists. Callen joined her in the backcourt with 13 points, 11 in the first half, and eight assists.

On the inside, Moore swiped every West Liberty inside pass and finished with a career-high seven steals. The junior made 7 of 16 from the floor for 18 points, a game-high 14 rebounds and four assists.

Lipscomb and Stein, who had nine boards, added 10 and nine points.

With the Cardinals victory, coach Buff reaches the 200 career collegiate coaching wins mark.

West Liberty center Marissa Brown posted a double-double of 17 points and 11 rebounds. McKenna Shives had 15 points.

Leading 38-35 at half, WJU saw a one-point lead, 48-47, turn into a deficit. West Liberty ran off the final 10 of 12 points in the third quarter for a 57-50 advantage.

The Hilltoppers held a six-point margin, 62-56, at 6:06 left in the game when the Cardinals battled back. WJU ran off the next 11 points and edged ahead, 67-62, on back-to-back layups by Moore and Lipscomb at 1:26 to set up the final regulation sequence.

WJU stays at home for one more contest as it hosts Fairmont State on Wednesday night, Jan. 24. Tip is set for 5:30 p.m.
