Cardinals Control Early, Take Yellow Jackets

WHEELING, W.Va. – An early 13-0 Cardinals run helped them take control of the Sunday contest. Wheeling Jesuit rode its 14-point opening nine-minute lead the rest of the contest and took West Virginia State, 88-70.

The Cardinals (11-2/7-1 Mountain East Conference) turned the lead into a 20-point halftime margin. The Yellow Jackets (6-7/4-4 MEC) attempted a mid-second half comeback, but the home team answered the call and kept no less than a 12-point lead the rest of the day.

"I thought we did a nice job on offense for the 40 minutes. We shot a high percentage shot and moved the basketball," noted WJU head coach Danny Sancomb. "The seniors at the start of the game stepped up with Drake Goddard's 3-pointers and Pat Moseh coming close to a triple double. Without Haywood Highsmith, Jeremiah Wilson was very efficient. Brent Pegram, especially in the second half, did a good job and Ryan Cooper stepped into the starting lineup and didn't miss a shot with a couple blocks."

Moseh came close to his first career triple double leading the Cardinals. The senior made 5 of 11 attempts for 15 points to go with nine assists and eight rebounds.

Wilson garnered high-point numbers with 23 points on 8 of 10 from the floor to go with seven rebounds. Pegram pumped in 15 of his 19 points in the second half on 6 of 10 shooting with a pair of treys, while he handed out four assists.

Cooper rounded out the double figure WJU producers with 11 points on 4 of 4 tries and made all three of his triples. He also blocked three shots.

Ernest Jenkins tallied 16 points for the Yellow Jackets.

WJU heads on the road for a Thursday night, Jan. 11, contest at Concord. Tip set for 7:30 p.m.
