Cardinals Have Enough Down Stretch Over Mt. Lions

ATHENS, W.Va. – In a tight battle all night, the Cardinals had enough down the stretch. A Pat Moseh spinning floater in the lane with 31 seconds gave Wheeling Jesuit the lead for good and held on for the 69-67 men's basketball win at Concord Thursday evening.

Trailing by seven points both at intermission and midway through the second half, the No. 19 Cardinals (12-2/8-1 Mountain East Conference) worked into their first lead since late in the first half on a Moseh trey and ensuing free throw for the four-point play and 54-52 lead. With 42 seconds, a pair of Tommy Bolte foul shots gave the home team its final lead, before Moseh lane jumper. Bolte missed a layup and turned the ball over in the final 18 seconds with two WJU foul shots kept it ahead for the win.

"It was another hard-fought game. Concord battled the whole 40 minutes. We played good team defense in the second half," said WJU head coach Danny Sancomb. "Pat (Moseh) did a good job attacking and scoring in the second half, while Haywood (Highsmith) and Jeremiah (Wilson) did a good job rebounding and scoring the ball. Preston (Boswell) made some big plays down the stretch. Brent (Pegram) and Ryan (Cooper) gave us productive minutes off the bench.

For the third-straight game in his return, Moseh led WJU in scoring. The senior hit 7 of 15 attempts for 18 points with 14 of them coming in the second half. He added six rebounds and four assists.

Wilson and Highsmith helped WJU outrebound the host, 46-41, with 31 defensive boards. Wilson dumped in 5 of 11 tries for 12 points to go with his 14 rebounds. Highsmith ran his double-double run to 13 games with 13 points on 5 of 8 shooting and 11 rebounds. The senior, like Moseh, put most of his production in the key second half with nine points and eight of his rebounds in the final 20 minutes.

Boswell chipped in 14 points, including 5 of 6 from the foul line. Drake Goddard, Pegram and Cooper each had four points.

The NCAA Division II scoring leader, Bolte, was held to 10 points under his 33.1 average at 23 points. He also had six assists for the Mountain Lions. BJ Hamlet added 17 points.

After an early 5-2 lead, WJU transformed a 15-15 tie into a 21-15 advantage capped by a Cooper hook shot with 8:48 in the opening half. With a 25-19 visitor lead, Concord ran off the next nine points to go ahead 28-25. A Wilson layup ended a 6:19 Cardinals dry spell without a field goal, but a home trey seconds later made it 36-29 at half.

A pair of Highsmith triples to open the second half cut the WJU deficit to a point, 36-35 in the first 1:17. Concord pushed the difference back to seven points, 50-43, at 11:08 remaining. The Cardinals received buckets by Boswell and Moseh and made a two-point game, 50-48, and stayed a one-possession game the rest of the final nine minutes.

WJU stays on the road for a Saturday afternoon, Jan. 13, game at UVa-Wise. Tip is set for 4 p.m.
