Moore Powers Cardinals Past Golden Eagles

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Chenelle Moore showed no ill effects of the holiday break Thursday night. Moore powered Wheeling Jesuit past the University of Charleston, 78-72, with her 27-point and 18-rebound night in the 2018 schedule opener.

After WJU (5-8/3-4 Mountain East Conference) led by nine points, 61-52, on a Monica Burns 3-pointer with 7:54 left in the game, Charleston (7-5/4-3 MEC) mounted a comeback. The Golden Eagles raced back with a 12-2 run to take its first lead since the opening quarter, 67-66, at 2:45. Cassi Stein answered with a layup, which put WJU back ahead and never trailed in the last 2:32.

Moore, though, was the engine of the Cardinals train all night. The junior started in the first half with nearly a double-double of 16 points on 7 of 11 from the floor, nine rebounds, three steals and a block. Moore added another 11 points and nine boards in the second half to finish with 27 points on 11 of 21 attempts and 18 rebounds, 10 offensive. The forward also had four steals.

"Chenelle Moore came up big as it was a very collective win for us," explained WJU head coach Debbie Buff. "Mariah Callen ran the offense well for us in the second half and Khira (Burton) gave us very value minutes and was very efficient. We had a good week of practice and it showed today. I was happy to get the win on the road."

Along with Moore in double figures, both Burns and Callen joined her with 14 and 13 points. The two guards combined for seven rebounds, four assists and two steals.

Burton and Lauren Lipscomb each chipped in eight points off the WJU bench.

WJU pulled down 17 offensive rebounds and won the battle on the glass, 34-29. The Cardinals also swiped 11 steals and forced 19 Golden Eagles turnovers.

Octavia Loll led UC with 19 points on 8 of 15 shots.

After Moore started the game with a layup, Charleston netted the next nine points and would open a 12-4 lead. Lipscomb and Moore finished the opening quarter with back-to-back buckets to cut the WJU deficit to 17-12.

WJU rode the momentum with the first eight points to open the second frame. Burton and Burns downed consecutive treys and Moore added a layup for its first lead 20-17. A Burton triple with 2:11 to go before half took the Cardinals lead up to eight points, 36-28, before two Moore free throws made the largest lead, 41-32. Charleston took a point off the difference by intermission, 43-35.

The Golden Eagles cut the visitor lead down to a point twice in the third quarter, 45-44 and 47-46. A Stein layup pushed it up to four points, 56-52, by the end of the third quarter.

WJU returns home in a Sunday afternoon, Jan. 7, contest against West Virginia State. Tip is set for 2 p.m.
