Cardinals Claim OT Win Over Golden Eagles, Give Sancomb Win No. 200

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – It took an extra five dramatic minutes of action, but the Wheeling Jesuit men's basketball team claimed a 90-87 victory at the University of Charleston and gave head coach Danny Sancomb career win 200 in the process.

After leading all but three minutes of the contest, a Charleston 3-pointer tied the game, 75-75, with 13 seconds in regulation. Following a Cardinals foul on an inbounds play, the Golden Eagles (8-5/4-3 Mountain East Conference) were unable to convert two free throws with 0.7 seconds left to take the game to force overtime. Pat Moseh converted a 3-point play and the No. 19 Cardinals' (10-2/6-1 MEC) took advantage of the extra period and never trailed. The Moseh bucket turned out to be the lone overtime field goal, but WJU converted 13 of 17 free throws for the victory.

With the victory, coach Sancomb becomes only the second coach in WJU program history to reach 200 wins as he stands at 200-111 in his now 11th season at the helm. Sancomb joins his collegiate coach Jay DeFruscio, who finished at 311-212 during his tenure.

"Hard win. Charleston played very hard and kept playing," said Sancomb. "We need to execute better on both ends. Pat gave us nice minutes tonight as he scored the ball and did a nice job on the glass and on defense. Haywood (Highsmith) was solid, while Jeremiah (Wilson) did a good job attacking and rebounding. Preston (Boswell) did a nice job scoring the ball. It was a good team win."

After being out the final three December games, Moseh returned to the tune of a career-high 30-point effort with 21 of those points coming in the deciding second half and overtime. He made 11 of 19 from the floor as the senior added eight rebounds and three assists.

Moseh was one of three 20-point WJU scorers in the game. Highsmith recorded his 12th double-double with 23 points on 10 of 18 attempts to go with 11 rebounds, three assists and four blocked shots. Boswell made 11 of 14 free throws for half of his 23 points.

Wilson added his second double-double of the season with 13 points and 12 boards.

Keir Anderson and Riley Weatherington paced Charleston with 14 and 12 points apiece.

The Cardinals netted the night's opening bucket and retook the advantage, on a Brent Pegram foul shot at 10:52 in the first half. WJU led by as many as eight points, 21-13, on a Highsmith offensive rebound and put back. UC stayed close and trailed 32-29 at intermission.

WJU continued to lead the contest and did not trail in the second 20 minutes. A Boswell fast break layup with 11:43 left in the game made it 50-42.

Charleston, like the latter part of the first half, rallied and kept it a two possession game until a trey tied the game at 75 with 17 seconds left. WJU committed a turnover with 1.3 seconds and then made a foul on the inbounds play with .7 seconds.

WJU returns home for the first time of 2018 in a special Sunday game against West Virginia State. The tip will be at 4 p.m.
