Highsmith Wills Cardinals over Tigers

WTRF Highlights
WHEELING, W.Va. –
A Cardinals career high is always good to have on a tough shooting night as a team. Haywood Highsmith willed Wheeling Jesuit to a 71-60 men's basketball win over Salem University Monday night behind his 32-point career best.

Trailing 52-51 with 8:23 left, WJU (16-4) netted the next seven points as Preston Boswell downed a triple and Brendan Hoban layed in a fastbreak bucket with Highsmith assisting on both. Pat Moseh stole the next Salem (5-15) possession and lofted it ahead for a Highsmith dunk for a 58-52 lead the home team did not give up.

"I am happy we won, but we need to be better. It was an ugly win, but it is a win," stated WJU head coach Danny Sancomb. "It was a tough game shooting for a lot of our guys, but we found a way to win."

The Cardinals coach continued, "We were solid on defense and did a better job in the second half defending their 3-pointers as they had to work for all they got."

Highsmith scored over half of WJU's first-half points with 20 to go with eight rebounds and four blocks. The senior continued with another dozen points in the second 20 minutes and combined it with 19 caroms, five blocks, two assists and two steals.

Boswell was the Cardinals only other double-digit scorer at 16. Despite a tough night shooting, Moseh almost grabbed his triple-double as he finished with eight points, 10 rebounds and nine assists.

Jeremiah Wilson added five points and six rebounds, while Ryan Cooper gave WJU four points and five boards.

The Tigers saw their big guy inside, Malik Toppin, led with 23 points and nine rebounds.

WJU forced 19 Salem turnovers and outrebounded the visitors, 43-39.

Midway through the first stanza, WJU put 11-0 run together and enjoyed its largest lead of the night of 14 points, 25-11. The Cardinals held a 37-29 lead at half.

WJU has a pair of days off until it hosts Concord on Thursday night, Feb. 1, at 7:30 p.m.
