Cardinals Third-Quarter Run and Defense Keys Road-Win over Rams

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – After a tough home contest, the Cardinals bounced back with a strong road effort. Wheeling Jesuit women's basketball used its defense and a key 14-2 third-quarter run to overtake Shepherd, 63-50, Saturday afternoon.

Mariah Callen downed a 3-pointer with 1:19 left in the first quarter to push WJU (9-11/7-7 Mountain East Conference) ahead, 19-17. The Cardinals outscored the Rams, 29-12, combined between the second and third frames, including turning a four-point lead into a 16-point cushion of 46-30 decided the contest. The home Rams (9-11/5-9 MEC) did battle back to within 10 points, 56-46, with 3:05 left, but they could not get closer.

"A great road win for us. We followed the scout and played stellar defense," said WJU head coach Debbie Buff. "Lo (Lipscomb), Chenelle (Moore), Tori (Harrison) and Cassi (Stein) were outstanding. Our bench brought us a ton of energy and helped us have one of our best defensive games of the season."

Moore powered the Cardinals from the inside once again with an outstanding game of 8 of 11 from the field for 17 points. She pulled down 15 rebounds for another double-double to go with four assists, two blocks and two steals.

Callen hit 4 of 9 attempts with a trio of 3-pointers for 15 points and added four boards. Stein was right behind her with three treys of her own and had 13 points.

Lipscomb added a fourth double-digit scorer at 10 points and grabbed four rebounds. Monica Burns had seven points.

WJU cleaned the glass to a tune of 38-24 and held Shepherd to only 35.3% from the field (18 of 51).

Kari Lankford paced the home team with 14 points, eight rebounds and seven assists.

WJU returns home for a pair of MEC contest next week starting on Thursday night against Concord. Tip goes up at 5:30 p.m.
