Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Chris Myers

Rams Tough on Line, Upset Cardinals

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Every Cardinals run of momentum stopped on the home team's foul line. Shepherd finished the first half strong and held off all Wheeling Jesuit second-half pushes by being tough on the foul line for the 99-88 Mountain East Conference men's basketball upset.

After a Cardinals' 3-pointer by Chris Greene made it 26-24, Shepherd answered with 8 of the final 10 first-half points for an 8-point intermission advantage. The Rams (12-8/8-6 MEC) made 33 of 40 foul shots in the second half and 11 of 14 in the final five minutes to prevent the Cardinals (15-4/11-3 MEC) from getting closer than eight points in the second half.

"We didn't play well as a team together. We struggled defensively as Shepherd did a good job with their offensive execution. We have to bounce back on Monday," said WJU head coach Danny Sancomb.

The WJU loss spoiled the big day by leading-scorer Haywood Highsmith. The senior forward downed 9 of 18 shots, including 5 of 10 from long-range, for a season-best 31 points to go with 13 rebounds and three steals.

Pat Moseh added 23 points, 12 boards and five assists. Preston Boswell was the only other double-digit point producer with 11.

Shepherd put six players in double figures led by Thomas Lang's 23 points, including 10 of 10 from the foul line, and six assists.

For the game, the Rams made 35 of 43 free throws.

WJU has a day off before it returns to the McDonough Center in its last non-conference game against Salem University. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
