Cardinals Take Control in Second Half, Post Win over Falcons

WHEELING, W.Va. – The Cardinals recorded one of its biggest wins of the year Wednesday night. Wheeling Jesuit took control in the second half and posted an 88-82 win over Fairmont State in Mountain East Conference men's basketball.

Trailing 36-35 after the opening second-half bucket, a Preston Boswell layup and Jeremiah Wilson fastbreak dunk gave No. 19 WJU (15-3/11-2 MEC) a lead it would not give up. The Cardinals pushed the margin to 11 points (57-46) nine minutes into the second stanza and up to 14 points (73-59) with 4:22 left. The Falcons (14-5/10-3 MEC) made a final charge, but they were unable to get closer than four points in the final 1:17.

"It was a great team win for us tonight. We need it as they had won seven games in a row coming in. We won the game due to defense and how we made them work and contested their 3-pointers," noted WJU head coach Danny Sancomb. "It is a good rivalry we have with them, but for a rivalry to be good you have to win some games. We knew we had to be ready to play as we wanted to win and didn't want to lose two in a row, especially at home."

The Cardinals were led by their triple threat of Preston Boswell, Haywood Highsmith, and Pat Moseh, who combined for 68 points and 24 rebounds. Boswell pumped in a season-high of 26 points, but it was his 16 for 16 at the foul line that proved to be the most important, including 8 of 8 in the final 55 seconds. He also pulled down six rebounds and had two steals.

"Preston, Haywood and Pat were ready to play for us tonight," stressed Sancomb. "Preston is a warrior as he will throw his body in there when he attacks the rim. His 16 of 16 from the foul line says a lot as he is becoming such a great player for us."

Highsmith recorded another double-double of 23 points on 8 of 14 from the field and 6 of 6 from the charity stripe to go with 12 rebounds. Pat Moseh downed 6 of his 12 attempts for 19 points, while he had six rebounds and seven assists.

Despite first-half foul trouble, Wilson finished with 12 points and six rebounds.

"Jeremiah was big inside for us, especially in the second half, while we had good minutes off the bench from Brent Pegram, Brendan Hoban and Chris Greene. Drake Goddard also ran the offense and was solid," added Sancomb.

Even though he was only 4 of 15 from the field, Jason Jolly finished with 24 points to pace the FSU scoring.

In the first half, neither team led by more than six points with six ties. WJU led by six points three times in the final four minutes, before FSU netted the final four points to make it 36-35 at intermission.

WJU travels next to Shepherd for a Saturday, Jan. 27, meeting starting at 4 p.m.
