Falcons Score Final Two Goals, Fend off Cardinals

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – The Cardinals showed marked progress on the Friday afternoon pitch. Wheeling Jesuit's Jenny Soegaard-Andersen tied the match 30 seconds into the second half, but Notre Dame scored the final two goals for the 3-1 Mountain East Conference women's soccer victory.

Cardinals (0-2) goalie Hannah Thompson made seven impressive first-half saves. The Falcons, though, put in a deflection in the 35th minute for a 1-0 halftime advantage. Soegaard-Andersen gathered the ball just into the home side of the field in the opening 30 seconds of the second half and lofted a long shot over the home goalie to tie the match, 1-1. The defending MEC champion Falcons answered the bell against a very game Cardinal club with the last two scores.

Notre Dame College outshot WJU, 24-7, while Thompson posted 12 saves in the match, a career-high.

Allyson Evans booted a shot in the next minute after the Soegaard-Andersen winner only to see it fly wide. Emily Hartley had her attempt saved late in the second half (81:29) as the other visitor shot on goal.

WJU makes the trek up the hill for a Sunday afternoon, Sept. 10, match at West Liberty. Kick-off is set for 1:30 p.m.
