WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – In the first matchup of the season, West Liberty was able to prevail over Wheeling Jesuit women's soccer, 3-0 in the Mountain East Conference match.

The Hilltoppers (2-1-1/1-1-1 MEC) were able to convert on two first half chances and added a third later in the second half against the Cardinals (0-3/0-2 MEC). Maggie Simon and Nikki Loiua scored in the first half at 10:12 and 22:47, before Makayla Gammon had the third (73:36).

In the first half, Micah Miller booted a shot only to be saved at 11:32, only 1:20 after the first home goal. Sara Blasiman tried the lone other WJU first-half scoring try, which went wide.

Nikki Hillard saw her early second-half shot saved (52:09), before Allyson Evans put together four attempts of her own. Evans had her first shot blocked (56:55) and followed with another less than a minute later, which was saved. The freshman connected two more times at both 78:59 and 89:31 only to see her tries saved and turned away.

The Cardinals Hannah Thompson accounted for four saves in the net. West Liberty outshot WJU, 13-8, but only 6-5 in the second 45 minutes.

WJU will open its home schedule this Thursday, Sept. 14, in a 5:30 p.m. match against the MEC preseason favorite Charleston.
