Golden Eagles Spoil Cardinals Home Opener with Late Score

WHEELING, W.Va. – The improving Cardinals put together their strongest outing Thursday night. The University of Charleston snapped a scoreless game with 5:15 left and spoiled Wheeling Jesuit women's soccer home opener, 1-0.

The Cardinals (0-4/0-3 Mountain East Conference) booted six first-half shots including a pair of the foot of Kayla Klock, but all went for naught. The home squad added two more shots on goal in the second half, before the Golden Eagles (2-2-1/2-1-1 MEC) received the match's lone score by Alana Mikulis at 84:44. WJU was unable to get off a shot in the final five minutes in a tough defeat.

Charleston tried nine of its 12 shots in the second half and edged the game total, 12-10. WJU goalie Hannah Thompson saved three shots.

Klock paced the Cardinals attack with four shots on goal with Kendra Benzel and Brianna Murgi accounting for the other two.

WJU stays at home when it hosts Urbana in a 5:30 p.m. match Saturday night, Sept. 16.
