Mountain Lions Score Early in OT, Edge Cardinals

WHEELING, W.Va. – In a back-and-forth contest, Concord capitalized on the first overtime chance and edged Wheeling Jesuit men's soccer, 1-0, Saturday afternoon.

In an evenly played game with both sides having their chances, the Mountain Lions (2-7-1/2-4 Mountain East Conference) saw Moulay Hassani break through the Cardinals (2-6-1/0-5 MEC) defensive left wing and pound the ball into the net only 1:15 into overtime.

In the first half after a Concord shot was saved, WJU failed to convert on five corner kicks over the opening 27 minutes and did not get a shot off on any of the kicks. Manny Del Rio went wide (30:47) as did Matt Vogt's header (43:10) the rest of the opening half.

Martin Minuzzi connected on a shot, which was saved in the 64th minute, before Dominque Pierce forced the Concord goalie to make a diving save at 68:24. The Mountain Lions had the final regulation push where their shot in the final second hit the post and the match went to overtime, 0-0.

Concord finished with the regulation shot lead, 9-8, but had the key lone overtime shot. WJU goalie Tyler Shotwell saved three visitor shots.

WJU returns to the Bishop Schmitt Field on Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 3, in a 5:30 p.m. match against Shepherd.
