Seniors Propel Cardinals Past Rams, 5-0

WHEELING, W.Va. – A pair of early goals were all the Cardinals needed Tuesday evening. Four Wheeling Jesuit men's soccer seniors combined for five goals and propelled their team to a 5-0 shutout of Shepherd.

In the opening seven minutes, Owain Hawkins tapped in a goal from the left side at 5:40 and he was followed by Micah Tatebe's rebound off the Rams (0-10-1/0-6 Mountain East Conference) goalie only 1:18 later.

The Cardinals (3-6-1/1-5 MEC) received a pair of tallies by Matt Vogt via a header at 50:36 and off a Martin Minuzzi corner kick 11 minutes later to make it 4-0. Carlos Molina converted a Manny Del Rio cross for the fifth score at 81:26.

Jordan Simpson was credited with assists on WJU's first two goals, while Sullian Saouzanet had a helper on the third score.

WJU outshot Shepherd by an 18-8 final margin, including a 11-3 second-half difference. Goalie Tyler Shotwell turned away five Rams attempts on his way to his third shutout of the fall season.

WJU begins round two of its MEC schedule on Sunday. The Cardinals host the Falcons of Notre Dame College in a 4:30 p.m. match on Sunday, Oct. 8.
