WHEELING, W.Va. – After pressing the action from halftime on, the Cardinals finally converted a winner.
Brianna Murgi booted a penalty kick with 19.4 seconds left in double overtime and pushed Wheeling Jesuit past Fairmont State in women's soccer Wednesday night.
Following a foul committed by the Falcons (2-3-3/1-3-3 Mountain East Conference) goalie in the box on a Cardinals (3-5/2-4 MEC) corner kick. Murgi did not waste the penalty kick and stuck it into the upper left hand of the goal for the game-winner.
WJU turned up the pressure starting once the second half began. The home team outshot Fairmont State, 11-3, in the second 45 minutes and 4-1 in the two overtime periods.
Sarah Blasiman blasted a shot wide right for WJU only 1:09 into the second overtime. The Falcons' Erica Uselton headed a ball off a corner kick six minutes later, which went high. At 109:28,
Allyson Evans kicked the ball from the corner where the game-deciding foul was set up for the Murgi penalty kick.
Evans also a shot saved by the FSU netminder at 95:57 to preserve the scoreless tie midway through the first extra frame.
Maria Ruggary saw a long shot off her foot saved with only 1:24 left in regulation after another WJU corner kick.
Sophomore goalie
Megan Herter recorded the WJU shutout and saved three FSU shots.
The Cardinals remain at home and host the Mountain Lions of Concord Saturday afternoon, Sept. 30, in a 1 p.m. match.
