Cardinals Strong Set Finishes Lead to Shutout of Falcons

FAIRMONT, W.Va. – In a battle for the early season league lead, the young Cardinals proved tough in the late sets. Wheeling Jesuit finished strong in the opening two sets and claimed a pair of 25-23 set wins, before it pulled away and completed a 3-0 shutout at Fairmont State.

Down 22-21, the Cardinals (10-4/2-0 Mountain East Conference) came out of their time out in a flurry with four of the final five points, including a pair time out Haley Kramer kills to claim the opener. Tied at 23 in the second set, Maddy Smyth and Aleah Stauffer downed back-to-back winners for a 2-0 match lead and 25-23 final against the Falcons (9-5/1-1 MEC). WJU went out to an early 10-3 advantage and pushed ahead 21-12 in the third set before it completed the shutout by a 25-14 margin.

WJU and Concord are the lone MEC teams to finish the opening conference weekend 2-0.

For the second time in as many days, Kramer paced the Cardinals with 15 kills and no errors in 29 attacks for a .517 hit percentage. The sophomore middle blocker added four digs and three block assists.

Cassie Meyer recorded her ninth double-double in 14 matches of her freshman season with 13 kills and 19 digs. Makenna Babb added eight kills and 12 digs with Smyth hitting six kills.
