WJU Volleyball Starts MEC Play with Sweep of Rams

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – In the Mountain East Conference season opener, the Wheeling Jesuit volleyball teams swept past Shepherd University on the road Friday night, 3-0.
 
The Cardinals (9-4/1-0 MEC) scored the final five set points in both the first and third sets and pulled away for 25-14 and 25-15 victories. The Rams (9-3/0-1 MEC) pulled to within a point, 15-14, midway through set two, but the visitors netted three-straight tallies later for a 23-18 cushion, before a 25-21 set win.
 
WJU has now won six matches in a row and eight of its last nine.
 
Individually, Haley Kramer powered a match-high 15 kills to go with seven digs and three block assists. Cassie Meyer added another double-double with 10 kills and 15 digs. Makenna Babb chipped in seven kills and five digs.
 
Stephanie Sylvester dished 39 assists, while she had seven digs, two kills and a block assist. Audrey Francis dug 16 attacks on defense.
 
Shepherd saw three players reach seven kills to lead the home club.
 
WJU completes its two-match MEC-road swing with a Saturday afternoon matchup at Fairmont State. First serve is for 2 p.m.
 
at Shepherd – 3-0 W (25-24, 25-21, 25-15)
After WJU put the first three points of the night on the scoreboard, Shepherd answered back and took a 6-4 set one advantage. The Cardinals added the next four points and never trailed in the set again. Leading 12-10, WJU went on a 7-1 run for a 19-11 lead and added the final five points for the 25-14 opening win.
 
The Cardinals, again, opened an early 4-0 lead in set two, but saw the Rams eventually tie it at 13. The visitors received Kramer and Meyer back-to-back kills from there. Kramer added four more winners for the final Cardinals points (25-21).
 
For a third time, WJU opened an early lead of 5-0 and then 10-2. Shepherd was able to get back to within five points three times, including 19-14, but WJU scored five of the final six tallies to end the match.
