North Alabama Wins Final Three Sets, Defeats WJU

PENSACOLA, Fla. – Opening weekend came to a close against another tough Cardinals foe. North Alabama gained the momentum and claimed the final three sets and defeated Wheeling Jesuit volleyball, 3-1, early Saturday afternoon in the West Florida Hampton Inn-Vitational.
 
The Cardinals (1-3) came out strong with a .325 first set hitting percentage. Tied at 14, WJU ran off the next four points and never trailed again for a 25-22 set win. The RV Lions (2-1) turned the tide and recorded 25-21, 25-18 and 25-18 set victories.

North Alabama marked the fourth WJU opponent to be either ranked in the AVCA Top 25 or one of the teams receiving votes in the poll this weekend.
 
WJU had Cassie Meyer again lead the frontline attack with 18 kills to go with nine digs and four blocks. Kenzie Schroer hit double digits with 10 kills and two block assists.
 
Makenna Babb missed a double-double by one kill with nine winners and 20 digs. Haley Kramer chipped in nine kills and Chase Cole added five kills and four blocks.
 
Audrey Francis dug 22 attacks and Abby Moffit had seven. Stephanie Sylvester posted a double-double of 48 assists and 13 digs.
 
After the opening .325 hit percentage, the Cardinals team hit no better than .234 in any of the three final sets.
 
Both Jessica Austin and Lexie Bradley downed 22 kills apiece for the North Alabama cause.
 
WJU returns to the court in another prestigious tournament next weekend at the University of Indianapolis next Friday and Saturday, Sept. 8-9.
