Cardinals Volleyball Strong Finishes Propel Pair of Wins

INDIANAPOLIS – For the first time of the early season, the Cardinals sweep a pair of matches. The Wheeling Jesuit volleyball team used two strong finishes after dropping the first sets of the day for wins over Grand Valley State and Davenport on the opening day of the University of Indianapolis Tournament.

Following an 18-25 loss in the first set, WJU (3-3) bounced back with three-straight wins of 25-16, 25-20 and 25-19 over the Lakers (2-3). The Panthers (2-5) claimed a 25-15 set, before the Cardinals gathered themselves to go ahead 2-1, 25-16 and 25-20. Davenport rallied for a 25-19 fourth set, but WJU went out to a six-point deciding-set lead and won 15-11.

In the opener, freshman Cassie Meyer continued to produce. The outside hitter belted a new high for herself with 20 kills to go with 17 digs against Grand Valley State and added 17 kills and 18 digs in the second match.

Haley Kramer continued to emerge at middle blocker where she killed the Cardinals final three, fifth-set points, including downing the game-winner on a slide kill. The sophomore finished the day with 29 kills, 15 of them against Davenport.

Audrey Francis dug 20 attacks in each match, while Stephanie Sylvester handed out 44 assists and added 15 digs against both opponents for two double-doubles.

Maddy Smyth chipped in 11 kills in game two and Kenzie Schroer totaled the same 11 kills against Grand Valley State.

Shannon Winicki paced Grand Valley State with 12 kills. Krissy Dill hit 18 winners for Davenport.

WJU continues its weekend trip with Saturday matches of 1 p.m. against No. 13 Winona State, before it faces the host University of Indianapolis at 7 p.m.
