Vogt Boots OT Game-Winner, Propels Cardinals Past Vulcans

CALIFORNIA, Pa. – On a rainy southwestern Pennsylvania late afternoon, the Cardinals recorded their first season victory. Matt Vogt booted the game-winner just 1:02 into overtime and propelled Wheeling Jesuit men's soccer past California (Pa.) by a 2-1 final.

Vogt found the back of the left side of the net at 91:02 to help WJU improve to 1-0-1 in the first week of the season. Freshman Sullian Saouzanet pushed the ball left side off a deflection for the match's first goal with 78:56 gone.

California made it a short-lived WJU lead when Joseph Valeriano tied the match, 1-1, at 82:33.

The Cardinals' Martin Minuzzi's shot with 27 seconds left in regulation went wide and it was on to overtime for the second time this week.

"We struggled with consistency today and both goalies had great games," said victorious WJU coach Jim Regan.

Both teams attempted exactly the same amounts of shots with three in the first half and eight in the second. It was the 12th WJU try by Vogt, which ended the match.

Cardinals goalie Tyler Shotwell posted two saves and the junior has now allowed only a single goal in the season's opening 201:07.

WJU stays on the road and opens Mountain East Conference play on Wednesday afternoon in a 4 p.m. match at Notre Dame College.
