Falcons Ride Early Goal Past Cardinals

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – In the Mountain East Conference men's soccer opener for both teams, Notre Dame College rode an early goal to defeat Wheeling Jesuit, 1-0, on Wednesday afternoon.

The Falcons (2-1) Reymar Kicohko knocked the ball into the left side of the goal off a crossing pass at 9:40 into the match. In the final 20 minutes, the Cardinals (1-1-1) tried to tie the match, but saw all four of its opportunities come up short for their first defeat of the season.

"We played tough defensively. (Tyler) Shotwell made a couple big saves to keep it a 1-0 game," stated WJU head coach Jim Regan. "We just need to get better now in the final third."

From 35 yards out at 70:52, Martin Minuzzi served a free kick to the center of the Notre Dame College goal only to see the netminder grab it from his knees. Rueben Miguel Calvo saw his attempt blocked with 79:31 and Micah Tatebe's boot suffered the same fate two minutes later with an Owain Hawkins shot go high (80:01) for the Cardinals late scoring tries.

In the late opening half, Jordan Simpson had a try from the center of the field only to see his shot run high over the goal at 40:16.

Shotwell was tough in the WJU goal with six saves. Notre Dame College registered 14 shots to the visitors' six.

The Cardinals make their home opener this Saturday, September 9. WJU hosts one of the region's top teams in Millersville in a 2 p.m. kickoff at Bishop Schmitt Field.
