Urbana Fends Off Cardinals Ending Flurry

WHEELING, W.Va. – In an intense ending, Urbana fended off Wheeling Jesuit's match-ending flurry Saturday night in Mountain East Conference men's soccer for the 1-0 final score.

The Blue Knights' (3-2/2-1 MEC) Harry Tamplin knocked in a rebound off the Cardinals (1-4-1/0-3 MEC) keeper at 21:14 of the first half. WJU, though, put all the pressure in the final 20 minutes, but to no avail.

The Cardinals pelted the visiting goal with three opportune chances late. Martin Minuzzi's header was saved at 64:18. Rueben Miguel Calvo added a solid scoring opportunity 15 minutes later (79:10). Minuzzi served a corner kick seconds later where Manny Del Rio's hard boot was denied by the Urbana goalie at 79:57. Andres Da Silva attempted one last long-range try only to see it go wide right.

WJU has no seen all six of its matches be decided by a goal or less.

Urbana outshot WJU, 13-5, overall, but the home team had the best late tries.

Tyler Shotwell needed to make three saves at the end too. He saved two Blue Knight boots at 72:55 and 83:52, before the junior turned away a penalty kick (87:20).

WJU has one day off before it tries to rebound at Pitt-Johnstown on Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 19. Match starts at 4 p.m.
