Cardinals Jump on Mt. Cats, Post Shutout

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – The Cardinals had no trouble finding the scoring touch Tuesday afternoon. Wheeling Jesuit jumped on host Pitt-Johnstown early and posted a 6-0 men's soccer shutout.

Owain Hawkins started the WJU (2-4-1) scoring only 7:11 into the match on a penalty kick and added an own goal for a 2-0 first-half advantage. The Mountain Cats (0-4-1) did not muster a single shot in the match, while the visitors put four more shots in the net over the final 45 minutes.

"We jumped on them early and we found our scoring touch as multiple players contributed to creating the chances," said WJU head coach Jim Regan.

In the second half, Trey Tucker started the WJU scoring as he took a through ball from Sullian Saouzanet and chipped it over the home keeper at 57:20. Tucker served a cross to Rueben Miguel Calvo 10 minutes later and suddenly the scoreboard read 4-0.

Manny Del Rio from a Dominique Pierce pass and Carlos Molina contributed a goal apiece over the final 15 minutes for the 6-0 final.

Cardinals goalies Tyler Shotwell and Josh Zimmerman combined for the perfect shutout. WJU outshot UPJ, 25-0.

WJU stays on the road for a Sunday afternoon, Sept. 24, Mountain East Conference contest at West Virginia Wesleyan. Kick-off is slated for 1 p.m.
