WJU Men’s Soccer Suffers Last-Second Heartbreaker to No. 1 Charleston

WHEELING, W.Va. – Another Charleston and Wheeling Jesuit men's soccer matchup and another classic. Tied at a goal with four seconds left, the No. 1 Golden Eagles' N'Dah Williams headed the ball into the net and gave the Cardinals a heartbreaking defeat Thursday night, 2-1.

Following a Charleston (5-0/2-0 Mountain East Conference) goal by Patrick Guier at 19:41, WJU (1-3-1/0-2 MEC) answered. Jordan Simpson took a deflection a midfield and made it into a breakaway winner to tie the match, 1-1, at 21:50.

It appeared the heated rivalry would head to yet another extra period of play. The Cardinals Sullian Saouzanet connected on a strong boot at 82:56, but he saw it fly wide left. Exactly seven minutes later (89:56) off a Kieran Bywater corner kick, Williams headed the ball past the WJU defender and into the net for the game-winner.

The Charleston goal prevented another loss on the Bishop Schmitt Field while it was ranked No. 1 in the NCAA Division II ranks. On its last trip as the top team to Wheeling, the Cardinals shut out the Golden Eagles, 2-0, back on Sept. 30, 2015.

In this edition, the Golden Eagles held possession by a comfortable margin and outshot the home team for the match, 29-3, including 17-1 in the final 45 minutes of play.

WJU goalie Tyler Shotwell rejected 10 Charleston shots on goal.

The Cardinals have no time to rest as they host 2016 NCAA tourney team Urbana in an 8 p.m. contest Saturday night, Sept. 16.
