WJU Posts First Win of Year Over RV USC-Aiken, Fall to No. 2 SW Minn. St.

PENSACOLA, Fla. – In its best performance of the fledgling season, Wheeling Jesuit saw its freshmen propel it over the University of South Carolina-Aiken, 3-1, after it fell this afternoon to No. 2 Southwest Minnesota State, 3-1.
 
The Cardinals (1-2) dropped the night match's first set, 21-25, before they rallied for three-straight set wins (25-23, 25-19, 25-18) against the RV Pacers (0-2). In the afternoon bout, the No. 2 Mustangs (2-0) were pushed hard by the Cardinals (25-23, 25-19, 21-25, 25-21) for their second win of the day.
 
After not having a kill in Friday's first match, Makenna Babb came on for six in the final two sets over USC-Aiken. The freshman finished with nine kills and one error in 18 swings for a .444 hit percentage.
 
Babb's first-year teammate Cassie Meyer paced the Cardinals for the third time in as many matches with 35 kills in eight sets. She had two double-doubles (19 kills and 16 digs and 16 kills and 11 digs). Kenzie Schroer added 11 kills, six digs and five total blocks in the two matches and Chase Cole had four kills in both matches.
 
Middle blocker Haley Kramer showed strong with 20 kills, .386 hitting percentage and eight total blocks. Maddy Smyth chipped in seven winners in each match. Stephanie Sylvester combined for 91 assists, 17 digs and four kills running the WJU offense.
 
On defense, Audrey Francis dug 29 and 20 attacks, while Emily Reedy had 15 and 10 with three total aces.
 
WJU completes it opening weekend with a 12:30 p.m. Saturday first serve against North Alabama.
 
vs. No. 2 SW Minnesota State L, 3-1 (23-25, 19-25, 25-21, 21-25)
 
In the first set, WJU led late by scores of both 117-15 and 18-16. The Cardinals clung to a 22-21 lead only to see the highly-rated Mustangs net four of the final five points, 25-23.
 
After dropping the second set, WJU kept the third set tight. Leading by two points, a Smyth kill and a Kramer solo block made it 23-19. The two teams split the next four points for the WJU 25-21 final.
 
Tied at 20 in the fourth set, SW Minn. St. scored five of the last six points to end the match with the 25-21 win.
 
The Mustangs' Taylor Reiss led all players with 25 kills and 12 digs.
 
vs. RV USC-Aiken W, 3-1 (21-25, 25-23, 25-19, 25-18)
 
In a battle of two NCAA Division II Elite Eight teams, USC-Aiken registered the final four points of the first set and pulled out a 25-21 win.
 
WJU trailed 22-20 late in the second set only to score the next three and five of the final six tallies to edge out a 25-23 win capped by a Babb kill.
 
The Cards held six-point, 14-8 and 17-11, leads midway through set three of a 25-19 victory. WJU also built an nine-point, fourth set advantage on the strength of seven points in a row and never looked back in a match-deciding 25-18 final.
 
Christine Carroll led the Pacers with 14 kills.
