West Florida Takes Final Two Sets Over WJU Volleyball

PENSACOLA, Fla. – In one of the top opening weekend tournament of NCAA Division II volleyball action, host West Florida took the third and fourth sets and grabbed a four-set opener, 3-1, over Wheeling Jesuit Thursday night.
 
After they dropped the first set in a close 24-26 margin, the Cardinals (0-1) fell behind in set two, 5-0, only to come to the lead by mid-set and a 25-21 win. The RV Argonauts (1-0) grabbed the advantage with a strong third set, 25-18, and completed the win with the final four fourth-set points, 25-19.
 
Freshman Cassie Meyer paced the new-look Cardinals with 16 kills, six digs and four block assists. Haley Kramer pounded a career-high nine kills and four block assists.
 
Both Kenzie Schroer, who hit .375, and Maddy Smyth chipped in eight winners. Stephanie Sylvester handed out 41 assists. Audrey Francis dug 20 attacks and Emily Reedy added seven digs on the defense.
 
Rachel Neblett led West Florida with 17 kills and a .519 hitting percentage.
 
WJU has a tough second day in Florida as it faces No. 2 ranked Southwest Minnesota State at 3 p.m., before it takes on RV USC-Aiken in a 7 p.m. bout.
