Cardinals Battle to Scoreless Tie Against Griffins in Opener

GREENSBURG, Pa. – Building strength as the match wore on, Wheeling Jesuit men's soccer battled to a scoreless tie, 0-0, at Seton Hill in the 2017 season opener on Thursday.

The host Griffins (0-0-1) produced a strong opening half with 11 shots on goal, but Cardinals (0-0-1) goalie Tyler Shotwell was up to the task to turn away each attempt. WJU saw five shots on goal stopped in the final 65 minutes of action as neither team found the net.

"We started out the first 15 minutes nervous," stated WJU head coach Jim Regan. "After we settled, it was a good game back-and-forth. Both teams had a few chances in regulation. We had the best of chances in overtime with hitting the crossbar and we thought it crossed the line, but it wasn't called that way. We played well."

Sullian Saouzanet and Yafeu Rougier had early overtime shots, 93:02 and 94:07, which were saved and Trey Tucker saw a shot with 35 seconds in the period blocked to send the match to a second extra 10 minutes. Saouzanet booted the lone second overtime shot on goal at 102:57 and Tucker sent the match's final attempt wide in the 105th minute of play.

Seton Hill attempted more shots, 19-13, but WJU had a 9-7 final three period advantage, including a 6-3 two overtime margin. Shotwell turned away all 11 of the Griffins shots on goal.

Tucker and Saouzanet accounted for four of the 13 Cardinals shots apiece.

WJU returns to western Pennsylvania for a Saturday, Sept. 2, clash at California (Pa.) starting at 5:30 p.m.
