WHEELING, W.Va. – For the second consecutive year, the Wheeling Jesuit Cardinals will be playing for the Mountain East Conference women's lacrosse championship.
 
Wheeling Jesuit fought its way past West Virginia Wesleyan, 13-7, to clinch its spot in the championship match, where it will face Shepherd University, who defeated Virginia Wise 17-6. The championship match will be played at 1 p.m. on Sunday on Bishop Schmitt Field. 
 
The regular season meeting… 
Wheeling Jesuit defeated Shepherd 10-8 on April 21. Mountain East Conference Offensive Player of the Year Elizabeth Hales scored 45 seconds into the action and the Cardinals would never trail. 
 
Kori Hickman had the Rams' number in this match, scoring four times and dishing out three assists for a seven-point outing. Paige Plesich and Mary Burns each scored twice for the Cardinals.
 
All-MEC honorees Holly Deckert, Taylor Quigg, and Brianna Wahle combined for 15 ground balls and eight caused turnovers for the WJU defense. 
 
Shepherd was led by Courtney Schwiegerath's three goals. Lillian Funke finished with a pair of scores and one assist. Haley Price found the net twice. Schwiegerath also led the defense with three ground balls, two caused turnovers, and five draw controls. 


In the 2017 MEC Tournament… 
Top-seeded WJU took care of business against fourth-seeded West Virginia Wesleyan, as the Cardinals defeated the Bobcats, 13-7. 
 
Elizabeth Hales shot 10 times, scored three times, assisted on four goals, and caused two turnovers in the match. First Team All-MEC members Kori Hickman and Mary Burns combined for seven points, four ground balls, three caused turnovers, and a draw control. Fellow First Team All-MEC member Lyndsay Carpenter led the defense with three ground balls and two draw controls. She also scored twice in the match.
 
Shepherd knocked off two seed UVa-Wise in the semifinals match Friday afternoon in Wheeling. The Rams scored the first five goals of the match and would defeat the Cavaliers, 17-6.
 
Brooke Hunley led the way with five goals and a pair of assits for seven points. Courtney Matthews added a goal and four assists for five points to go along with her four ground balls and a caused turnover. Haley Price scored four goals of her own while scooping two ground balls.
