WJU Women’s Lacrosse -- MEC Tournament Preview -- Top-Seeded Cardinals Face Bobcats Friday Night

WHEELING, W.Va. – For the second consecutive season, the Wheeling Jesuit women's lacrosse team finished the regular season undefeated within Mountain East Conference play to earn the top overall seed. 
 
With the top ranking comes the honor of hosting the MEC tournament, in which the top four seeds compete for the championship.
 
The University of Virginia's College at Wise finished second, Shepherd came in at third, and the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats finished fourth. 
 
UVa-Wise (12-4, 4-1 MEC) and Shepherd (5-11, 3-2 MEC) kick the tournament off with a 4 p.m. Friday afternoon match before the Cardinals (8-7, 5-0 MEC) and Bobcats (4-10, 2-3 MEC) meet at 7 p.m. 
 
The championship match will be played at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

Friday's game notes:
The Cardinals ride a five-game win streak into the conference tournament, as they ran the table of conference matches to complete the regular season. 
 
West Virginia Wesleyan was the first of the five victories for Wheeling Jesuit, as on April 9 in Wheeling, West Virginia, the Cardinals stormed to a 17-7 victory. 
 
2017 regular season meeting: 
Only 10 minutes into the action, WJU had opened a seven-goal margin. At the half, the Cardinals led by nine, 12-3, and would outscore the Bobcats 5-4 down the stretch to win by 10, 17-7.
 
Elizabeth Hales scored three times and assisted on five other goals for her eight-point outing. Kori Hickman charted a career-best five goals on five shots and added one assist. Ally Coggins and Lyndsay Carpenter finished with three points each while Mary Burns and Olivia Krock each added two. 
 
Carpenter also led the Cardinal defense with four ground balls while forcing two turnovers and winning three draw controls. Burns added three draw controls and a ground ball to her two-point match.
 
The Bobcats were led by two points from Maria Seager, Natalie Schaffner, and Madison Duvall. 
 
WJU stat leaders: 
Hales remains atop the Cardinal stat list with 66 points, 39 goals and 27 assists. Hickman holds second with 20 goals and 26 assists for 46 points. Burns is third with 18 goals and 9 assists for her 27 points, and Paige Plesich occupies fourth with 23 points. Ally Coggins and Markie Wright have 13 points apiece, and Krock and Carpenter are tied with 12. 
 
Carpenter leads the defense with 50 ground balls and 34 caused turnovers. Holly Deckert adds 31 ground balls and 20 caused turnovers to the mix. Taylor Quigg has picked up 26 ground balls and caused 19 turnovers while Marie Austin has scooped up 24 ground balls and stopped 111 shots on goal. Brianna Wahle is the fifth Cardinal with 20 or more ground balls and has also caused 12 turnovers. Burns leads the way with 44 draw controls and Krock ranks second with 19. 
 
West Virginia Wesleyan stat leaders:
Schaffner paces WVWC with 52 points by way of 38 goals and 14 assists. She has also won 46 draw controls, picked up 27 ground balls, and caused 13 turnovers. Kim Lubic has scored 28 times and handed out eight helpers for 36 season points. Duvall ranks third in points (31), goals (24), and has seven assists on the year.
