Cardinals Take Strong Late-Season Run into MEC Softball Tournament

SALEM, Va. – After winning seven of eight games in the final week, the Wheeling Jesuit softball team takes its strong late-season run into this weekend's Mountain East Conference Softball Tournament.

The Cardinals (23-23/17-15 MEC North) clinched its Conference Tournament spot with their last week performance and second-place North Division finish.

WJU faces the defending NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional Champion and South No. 3 University of Charleston (34-17/22-8 MEC South) in one of two noon First Round games on Friday, May 5, at the James I Moyer Complex in Salem, Va.

In the other noon contest, MEC South No. 1 seed West Virginia Wesleyan (40-6/26-4 MEC South) faces the North No. 4 Urbana (16-26/12-20 MEC North).

The eight-team field's other two First Round games start at 2:30 p.m. – MEC North No. 1 Shepherd (35-18/21-11 MEC North) takes on South No. 4 Concord (28-26/17-13 MEC South) and South No. 2 UVa.-Wise (31-15/22-8 MEC South) against North No. 3 Notre Dame College (23-28/13-19 MEC North).

WJU has posted a 1-4 record in the MEC Tournament over the last two combined trips. The Cardinals went 1-2 in last May's Tournament. Concord prevailed 6-0 in the First Round over WJU. The Cardinals came back with a 3-2 win over the Falcons of Notre Dame College in 10 innings, before they were eliminated by UVa.-Wise, 5-3.

In the regular season, WJU went 11-9 against the other seven tournament-qualifying teams.
