Hickman’s Career High Helps WJU Past Wesleyan

WHEELING, W.Va. – The defending regular season Mountain East Conference champions began their 2017 league play in an impressive fashion. 
 
The Wheeling Jesuit Cardinals rushed to an 8-0 lead just 12 minutes into action and would never look back. WJU led 12-3 at the half and defeated the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats, 17-7. 
 
Kori Hickman, who leads the Cardinals in assists, netted a career-high five goals Sunday afternoon. Hickman scored twice during the 8-0 run and added one more first half strike followed by two second half scores. 
 
Markie Wright began the afternoon's scoring with a goal 39 seconds into play. Olivia Krock, Elizabeth Hales, Lyndsay Carpenter, Kate Calder, and Mary Burns completed the Cardinals eight-goal spurt. 
 
Wesleyan scored twice to make the contest 8-2, but WJU scored four more goals before the end of the first half to take a 12-3 advantage into the break. 
 
Paige Plesich sent the Cardinals ahead by 10, 13-3, with 27:59 in the second half. Hickman later scored back-to-back goals for WJU to put the Cards ahead, 15-5. Carpenter and Ally Coggins tallied the final two scores for the home standing Cardinals.
 
Hales led all players with eight points, as she scored three goals and dished out five assists. Hickman finished with her five goals and an assist for six points. Hickman also led the Cardinals with two caused turnovers. 
 
Coggins and Carpenter each finished with three points while Krock and Burns totaled two. Carpenter also forced two turnovers, scooped up four ground balls, and won three draw controls. Holly Deckert finished with a ground ball and a caused turnover. Brianna Wahle forced a turnover and picked up a ground ball. Maire Austin stopped seven Bobcat shots while Renee Cline stopped two shots in the second period.
 
The Cardinals travel to Virginia Wise on Saturday, April 15 for a 12 p.m. first draw.
