Cardinals Fight Past Cavaliers, Remain atop MEC Standings

WISE, Va. – Wheeling Jesuit and the University of Virginia's College at Wise met Saturday afternoon in a battle of two top ranked teams within the Mountain East Conference.
 
The Cardinals shot their way to a 9-4 halftime advantage and outlasted the Cavaliers down the stretch to win 13-10.
 
Paige Plesich started the scoring less than 90 seconds into the action. Kori Hickman found Plesich slashing in front of the net and Plesich sent the Cardinals ahead, 1-0.
 
Elizabeth Hales scored her first goal of the afternoon three minutes later to double the Cardinals lead, 2-0.
 
Hickman found Lyndsay Carpenter with 24:24 on the clock and the WJU lead grew to three goals. Hales scored again at 22:21 followed by Plesich's second score of the game to cap the Cardinals 5-0 run over the first eight minutes of play.
 
Wise scored their first goal of the afternoon at the 14-minute mark, but Hales, Hickman and Mary Burns answered with three consecutive strikes to grow the visitors lead to seven, 8-1.
 
The Cavaliers added three of the half's final four goals to pull within five, 9-4. Markie Wright tallied WJU's final score of the opening half.
With 14:32 in the second half, Plesich scored for the third time to send WJU ahead 12-9.
 
The Cavaliers added a score at the seven-minute mark to pull to within two goals late in the match.
 
Two minutes later, Hales supplied the Cards with an insurance goal to climb back ahead by three, 13-10, which ended as the final score.
 
Hales led the WJU offense with four goals, two assists and six points. Hickman added two goals and three assists for her five points. Plesich finished with four points, as she scored three times and assisted on another goal.
 
Burns, Carpenter, Mailloux and Wright all scored once on the afternoon. Mailloux added an assist while Burns won a team high six draw controls and scooped up a ground ball.
 
Taylor Quigg led the defense with a five ground ball effort. Brianna Wahle contributed a solid effort consisting of a caused turnover and a pair of ground balls. Ally Coggins and Lyndsay Carpenter each picked up four ground balls. Holly Deckert added a ground ball and a caused turnover while Olivia Krock won two draw controls and grabbed a ground ball. Taylor Booth shot once and finished with a ground ball to her credit.
 
The Cardinals continue league play with a Friday afternoon home match versus the Shepherd Rams. The April 21 match is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start.
