Cards Shoot Past Rams, Gain Sole Possession of First Place

WHEELING, W.Va. – For the second time in the past week, the Wheeling Jesuit women's lacrosse team squared off with an opponent who was undefeated in Mountain East Conference play entering the match.
 
As was the result against UVa-Wise, the Cardinals shot their way past the Shepherd Rams, 10-8, to gain sole possession of first place in the MEC.
 
Elizabeth Hales and Paige Plesich struck for two goals in the opening five minutes of action to help Wheeling Jesuit (6-7, 3-0 MEC) to an early two goal advantage.
 
Kori Hickman added the third WJU goal of the afternoon at the 23:20 mark, and Mary Burns doubled up the Rams (4-10, 2-1 MEC), 4-2, with 17:08 remaining in the first, but Shepherd would score back-to-back goals to tie the match up at four apiece.
 
The Cardinals managed to end the first half on a 3-0 spurt, capped by Burns' goal with 13 seconds remaining, to take a 7-4 lead into the break.
 
Out of the halftime intermission, Shepherd added a pair of goals, but the Rams' streak was quickly answered by WJU. Olivia Krock scored her sixth goal of the season at 25:19 before Hickman added another goal at 17:05. Hickman also added the final score of the contest at 6:53 to propel WJU to a 10-8 victory.
 
Hickman finished with a stellar game consisting of four goals and three assists for seven points. The Cincinnati, Ohio native also scooped up three ground balls and won one draw control. Plesich added three points to the WJU total while Mary Burns scored twice. Olivia Krock and Elizabeth Hales each added a goal.
 
Taylor Quigg and Brianna Wahle helped guide the WJU defense with their combined 11 ground balls and four caused turnovers. Quigg scooped up six ground balls and forced four turnovers while Wahle added five ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers.
 
Holly Deckert caused two turnovers and picked up four ground balls. Lyndsay Carpenter forced three Shepherd turnovers and grabbed a pair of ground balls. Burns led WJU with three draw controls won. Senior keeper Maire Austin stopped seven shots in her 60 minutes of play.
 
Wheeling Jesuit continues its home stint with a 4 p.m. Sunday match versus Notre Dame College. Eight seniors will be honored before the match.
