Cardinals Power to Opening Win, Drop One-Run Extra Inning Second Game

WHEELING, W.Va. – Behind three home runs with two from Dana Achille, the Wheeling Jesuit softball team run-ruled Concord, 9-0 in the opener, but dropped a one-run, extra-inning second game, 3-2.

Mallory Chapman belted a first-inning, two-run round-tripper, before Achille added a two-run and three-run blast later as the Cardinals (15-15/8-8 Mountain East Conference North) claimed the five-run 9-0 game.

The Mountain Lions (21-21/10-8 MEC South) tied the game in the sixth frame on an Allie Reid solo home run, before Abby Beatty's run-scoring single to center in the eighth plated the winning run.

Cassie Holstein paced the WJU offense with four hits and an RBI.

Chapman, Achille and Jackie Cramer each added three hits. Chapman lined two singles to go with her two-run homer, while Achille had one single with her home run pair and five RBI. Cramer went 3 for 3 in game two with a double and two singles with an RBI.

Morgan Stohlman and Rachel Conrad both lined a pair of hits. Mikaela Miller doubled.

Chapman (10-9) registered her fourth shutout of the year in game one. She allowed three first-inning singles and four total hits for the game with four strikeouts. The junior also picked up the game two loss where she gave up two earned runs on six hits with seven strikeouts to one walk.
