Chapman Pitches Shutout & Achille Drives in Three, Cardinals Split Against Pioneers

GLENVILLE, W.Va. – Mallory Chapman was masterful in the opener and Dana Achille drove in two runners in each game as Wheeling Jesuit split a softball road doubleheader at Glenville State on Friday afternoon.

Chapman never allowed a Pioneers (12-27/6-14 Mountain East Conference South) past second base as she registered her fifth shutout of the year, a five-hitter, in a 3-0 opening Cardinals (16-16/10-10 MEC North) win. After a top-of-the-seventh run sent the late game to extra frames, Glenville State's McKenzie Edmonds singled to right field for the game-winning score in the home 10th inning and 3-2 victory.

Achille sliced a two-run double in the opener and added a two-RBI single in the late game of her three hits.

Jackie Cramer went 4 for 7 and the trio of Molly Welsh, Chapman and Rachel Conrad each singled twice. Michaela Miller had a RBI single.

On the day, Chapman (11-10) worked 9.1 innings where she allowed six hits without an earned run. She added nine strikeouts to two walks. Erin Unterbrink went the first seven innings of game two where she gave up seven hits, two earned runs and fanned six.

Game 1
With one out, Victoria Scott and Conrad singled for WJU. Following the second out, Miller lined a RBI hit to right field for a 1-0 lead in the top of the second.

In the top of the seventh, Welsh, Cassie Holstein and Chapman lined hits to load the bases with one out. Achille drilled a two-run single to center field to make it 3-0.

Chapman allowed the fifth Glenville State hit of the game, but stranded the runner at first to complete the shutout.

Game 2
Taylor Brumfield's solo home run in the second frame gave the Pioneers their first lead of the day, 1-0.

The Cardinals struck back in the visiting third. With one out, Welsh singled and came around to score on a Chapman hit to left. Achille followed with a run-scoring double to center field and 2-1 lead.

Glenville State tied the game, 2-2, with a two-out double by Tori Ward.

After 2.5 scoreless extra innings, the Pioneers loaded the bases with one out. Edmonds singled home the game-winner, 3-2.

WJU continues on its weekend road trip with a pair of games starting at 1 p.m. against No. 12 West Virginia Wesleyan.
