Cardinals Rebound in Late Game, Earn Split with Cavaliers

GLEN DALE, W.Va. – After a tough opener at the plate, the Cardinals rebounded with eight runs and earned the softball split Saturday night. Wheeling Jesuit was held to two hits in a 4-0 game one loss, before a five-run fourth frame propelled it to an 8-3 late win over The University of Virginia's College at Wise.

The Cavaliers (18-14/9-7 Mountain East Conference South) used a pair of home runs and received a stellar Taylor Brandts pitching performance with 14 strikeouts in the game one win. The Cardinals (14-14/8-8 MEC North) never trailed in the late contest with two first-inning runs, before they plated five runners in the fourth for the victory.

Cassie Holstein singled twice, scored twice and swiped a pair of bases in the WJU effort. Taylor DiPerna and Jackie Cramer added two game-two hits apiece. Cramer drove home two and stole one base.

Dana Achille belted a sixth-inning solo homer, her third of the year, while both Molly Welsh and Ashley Ledbetter legged out doubles.

Victoria Scott drove home three runs with a sac bunt and a two-run single, while Mikaela Miller lined a RBI-single. Mallory Chapman and Morgan Stohlman had the other two Cardinals hits.

Erin Unterbrink (4-6) pitched the game-two complete game for her fourth win. She fanned eight and walked two.

WJU returns back to its home field at the I-470 JB Chambers Complex for a Sunday afternoon twinbill against Concord. First pitch is set for noon.

Game 1
UVa-Wise took advantage of the shorter John Marshall Field dimensions with an Ava Hockey two-run, third-inning home run and a Bridget Henzel solo shot in the fourth.
Brandts held the Cardinals offense to two singles in the two-hit, 14-strikeout pitching performance.

Game 2
Welsh slashed a leadoff home first-inning double, moved to third on Holstein's bunt single and scored on a Scott sac bunt. Ledbetter drove home Holstein with her second double of the year for a 2-0 lead.

The big WJU frame came in the fifth. With one out, the Cardinals put together four-straight hits. Stohlman and DiPerna reached first and Miller lined a sharp single for the first run. Cramer followed with her own two-run single, before three hitters later Scott lofted a two-run single to right field and a 7-0 advantage.

The Cavaliers plated a single fifth-inning run and two more in the sixth to make it 7-3.

Achille added an insurance run with a no-doubt solo homer in the home sixth for the eventual 8-3 final tally.
