Cardinals Second-Half Run Overtake Scots

WHEELING, W.Va. – The new Cardinals win-streak total is now three. Wheeling Jesuit used two six-goal runs and overtook Ohio Valley men's lacrosse, 18-6, Saturday afternoon.
 
Travis Getz helped WJU (4-7) take an early 4-3 lead, before McLean Fitzmartin and Mike Stillings added one score each for a 6-3 intermission margin over OVU (4-6). The Cardinals came out strong with the opening six goals in the third quarter and repeated the feat in the fourth quarter to pull away from the visitors.
 
Including the final two third-period goals, Dereck Downs registered three goals, while Getz equaled him along with one assist to lead the WJU offense.
 
Matt Lee fired home two scores and assisted on three others. Michael Jablonski and Stillings had two goals apiece, while Luke Gilman passed for three assists.
 
WJU goalies Kellen McMahon and Jake Lilly split time in net and stopped six and five OVU shots on goal.
 
After the first six fourth-quarter goals, WJU held an 18-4 lead, before OVU netted the match's final two scores.
 
Fitzmartin added a goal and an assist. Jamison Smith, Scotty Gwyn, Joe Wright, Trenton Kindall and Connor Buzelli all scored one time.
 
WJU has a week off until it hosts Lake Erie College next Saturday at 1 p.m.
