Downs Game-Tying Highlight
Kindall Game-Winning Highlight
WHEELING, W.Va. –
With 1.9 seconds left in the third overtime from 25 yards straight on, Trenton Kindall fired the game-winner as the Wheeling Jesuit men's lacrosse team calmed No. 19 Lake Erie College, 8-7.

After Cardinals (5-7) goalie Jake Lilly's 21st save with 16 seconds, Kindall took a short pass from Scotty Gwyn and raced 50 yards where he put on the brakes and flung a screaming liner past the Storm (6-5) goalie into the lower right side of the goal.

The entire Cardinals third extra-period Kindall heroics were set up by Dereck Downs in the final seconds of regulation. Trailing 7-6, Downs would not be stopped amidst four Lake Erie defenders until he found the net with 16.7 seconds left for the 7-7 tie.

The WJU defense held the Lake Erie College offense to only eight shots over the three four-minute overtime periods. Lilly saved six of those eight shots as he blanked the Storm over the final 17:08 of the match.

With the victory, the Cardinals snapped a five-match losing streak against the Storm. The last WJU victory in the series came on April 25, 2012, in a 12-7 win. The win not only was the Cardinals fourth-straight, but gave WJU head coach Landon DelPrince a victory on his birthday.

In the WJU scoring, Matt Lee and Jamison Smith netted two goals apiece. Downs assisted on two scores to go with his game-tying goal.

Along with Kindall, Jordan Getz and McLean Fitzmartin had the other two home goals. Michael Stillings assisted on the third Cardinals goal.

Lake Erie College received two goals and two assists from both Mitchell Stokes and Tim Bay.

The Storm lead 1-0 after one quarter and 2-0 with 18:33 elapsed in the match.

Lee took a pass from Downs for the first WJU score at 6:29 in the second quarter, but LEC held a 3-1 lead at intermission.

Getz tied the match, 4-4, with 4:58 in the third frame. The Storm's Bay answered with back-to-back goals 13 seconds apart and pushed his team back ahead, 6-4.

After an early Fitzmartin four-quarter goal, Lake Erie made it 7-5 with 7:09 remaining.

Smith cut the margin to 7-6 two minutes later (5:08) to set up the Downs late game game-tying goal.

WJU heads next Saturday for a 1 p.m. match at Alderson Broaddus.
